Over the New Year’s Holiday, I had the chance to go to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. And when they say Outer, they ain’t kidding. Basically out in the ocean. No roads. No internet. Big Ass Puddles and Wild Horses. Wild Horses!

We were in Carova Beach, NC. Accessible only by 4 wheel drive trucks, there are no roads, there is only the beach. Needless to say I had to park the minivan back on solid ground and hitch a ride with someone who had a more appropriate vehicle. Once we reached the ocean, our journey began. That’s where the road ends. And where the fun begins.
A 9 mile drive down the beach, dodging huge pieces of driftwood, shells and houses. Bouncing my way down the beach and away from civilization it really hit me how far away I am, from everything. Finally, the green mile post marker appeared and we made our way between two very large sand dunes. And then I saw it. The puddles. Well, I would call them small ponds. I asked if this was the “fun” way, surely there must be an easier way. Nope. Driving straight into big areas of water is something I avoid. This time, we had to go through it. Wow. Water everywhere. But after a few minutes of sloshing through the water the house appeared. A huge 12 bedroom house and that’s the only way to get there. Here is the view from the porch:

Here is a little video of some of our friends making their way through a few puddles near the house and yes, that is my redneck voice and holler:
The next few days were filled with good times with friends. We laughed, danced, watched wild horses, collected shells, took unnecessary rides for fun and laughed some more. Good Times.

What fantastic photos and a really fun video. My boys have been there with their dad because their aunt lives near there and they love it. But they have only been there in the summer, it’s great to see it this time of the year. Thanks for sharing, glad you had so much fun with your friends.
Wow! It is beautiful there! I’ve never seen real wild horses.

As a resident of Carova, I sometimes forget how it must all look from the eyes of a visitor. I hope that you come back in the summer when we have “dried out”.

I’m hearing that Rolling Stones song in my head…”Wild Horses…couldn’t drag me away”!
