Movie Premieres and Cupcakes

motherhood

For the past week, I have been traveling.  My trip to NYC was fabulous.  The shopping, the food and, oh yeah, the movie premiere.  After the essential trips to FAO Schwarz and Tiffany’s, we had amazing cocktails at the swanky Bergdorf Goodman restaurant on the 7th floor.  Looking over the city while sipping on deliciously expensive martinis is a sure way to leave the mommy guilt behind.  Ahhh, quiet refinement and no kids.  It felt like a dream.

The movie premiere?  Fabulous.  Uma Thurman, Minnie Driver and Anthony Edwards starred in Motherhood.  A wonderfully realistic view of a mom blogger who struggles to take care of herself, her family and her blog.  Tanya and I had several fits of laughter, and I was cringing at the similarities to my life.  While I may not live in NYC, I can completely relate.  The people she runs into, the tasks she must complete and the rigors of a child’s birthday party.  I appreciated the honest look into a mother’s life, without helpers and maids.  This movie is a must see for real moms, perfect country club moms will act like it doesn’t represent them, and the rest of us know it actually does.

The after party?  Awesome.  Tanya and I were perfectly prepared for the party.  We had our hair and make up done and, of course, had the perfect dresses for the event.  Movie stars and important people mingled as we took it all in with our signature Motherhood Cocktails in hand.  It was a pleasant party and thoroughly enjoyed by all.  We especially loved meeting the ladies from Baby Bjorn that made our trip possible!

Then, I saw it.  The cupcakes.  Now, normally, cupcakes are not things that frighten me.  But, this night was different.  Those cupcakes were mocking me.  Looking so pretty and perfect and all done.  What was my problem?

Those cupcakes reminded me that I have things to do.  Not in fancy NYC, but in NC.  I was reminded of the wedding I had to make cupcakes for as soon as I got back.  144 of them.  By Saturday afternoon.  12 dozen.  Perfect.  Cupcakes.  ACKKKK!!!!!!!!!

As soon as I returned home, I had to start packing again.  Off to make the cupcakes at a location closer to the wedding.  Asking myself why the hell I volunteered to make 144 cupcakes for my friend’s wedding, I packed up all of my supplies, my Kitchen Aid and my daughter.  We drove 2 hours, unpacked and started baking.  I baked all night long while my dear dear friend attempted to keep little Lucy entertained (and yes, it was a guy).  I finished baking the cupcakes at 3 a.m.  The next morning Lucy and I got up to frost them.  Do you know how much frosting you need for that many cupcakes?  A LOT.  By the end, I was covered in butter and cream cheese and made an agreement with myself never to have another cupcake, ever.

The result?  Beautifully perfect cupcakes, exactly as I wanted them.  Set up perfectly.  With perfect flowers.  So perfect, I missed the wedding, but hey, I figured the bride probably wanted cupcakes more than me at her wedding, so I skipped it, just so she would have all the perfectness.  The bride was happy and I was exhausted.

Today?  Lucy did not want to go to school.  I can understand, I want to be at home, too.  She has been such a trooper, being carted around from Grandma’s, to Raleigh, back to Grandma’s and finally home.  I think she wants to catch up on her stories and make sure her toys are properly situated.

Tomorrow?  Hopefully we will have gotten back into our routine and I will have magically caught up on all of my bloggy work.  Wish me luck, I am neck deep in emails and posts to write!   I have big hopes of accomplishing all of that, that is if little Lu will let me : )

The cupcakes look fantastic! Way better than the Motherhood cupcakes! I’m super impressed with your icing and Grandma did such nice job with arrangement! You rock!
