Each year, the Social Security Administration announces the most popular baby names for the previous year.

This year, one of the most popular baby names for girls is Sophia, previously the top name for girls was Isabella, which is number 2 this year. For boys, the top name is Jacob, a name from the Old Testament and means “supplanter”. The name Jacob is a cousin of James. For the past two decades, the popular boy’s name Jacob has been in the top ten of the list of names.

Mason, the number two most popular name is also the name of one of the Kardashian sisters son’s, of which Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick are the parents.

Sophia, the popular girl’s name this year is an ancient Greek name, which means “wisdom”

Sophia hasn’t always been a top name in the United States, it has only been on the top 100 list of names since 1997, and since then it has been ever increasing in popularity, rising to the ranks of the top 10 in 2006.

Some notable women with the name Sophia include: Sophia Loren, Sophia Vergera, Sophia Bush, and an alternate spelling of Sophia is Sofia Coppolla.

The name Jacob is one of the most popular baby names and is the name of one of the main characters in the Twilight series of books and movies, which as probably helped it to maintain it’s number one spot on the list. A famous celebrity with the name Jacob is the actor Jake Gyllenhall.
