How To Help Your Child Succeed In School

schoolIs your child having trouble in school?  Are you looking to help your child succeed better but don’t know where to start?  Try some of these tips to have your child on the road to success in no time.

Start by speaking to your child’s teacher.  This can play a vital part in your child’s success.  Let the teacher know that you would like to help your child any way that you can.  The teacher may be able to offer some insight into the types of problems that your child is having at school.  Is he/she having trouble understanding the material, or is the child just prone to distraction?  If distraction seems to be the main issue, see if the teacher would be willing to move your child to a seat that is further away from distractions, such as away from an open window or door into the hallways, or away from disruptive students.

If your child needs some extra work with you at home to better understand the material he/she is learning in school, there are a few things that you should try.  First, show an interest.  Ask your child about the day at school.  Try to get him/her to talk about what he/she is learning.  This is a great way to find out how much of the material your child is retaining.

Next, remember that a child is in fact a child.  Children learn through exploration and play.  Make learning fun when it comes to school.  Sometimes this means thinking outside of the box. If you can make learning a game, the child will be more than willing to participate.

Always reward your child for a job well done.  Even adults like to be complimented.  This may be as simple as hanging completed homework on the refrigerator.  Anything that shows your child that you are proud of him/her can be motivation for the child to keep trying in school.

One final tip to always remember is that encouragement is key.  Children can get easily discouraged, especially when they are unsure of themselves. If a child is not doing well, try to offer up some positive points first. Then  address the issues the child may be having with some pre-thought out solutions.

Sometimes just knowing that a parent is behind him/her is all it takes for a child to succeed.  If the child is looking for approval, encouragement or motivation, it is up to you, as a parent, to provide for him/her.  By working together as a team, the child will not feel alone.  Sometimes a support team is all it takes to get on the road to success to doing better in school.

Is Your Teen Ready To Date?

teenMany parents will wonder where did the time go? How did we reach this point? Times are certainly different now. Dating is not what it used to be. No more phone calls from a boy asking for a date, and waiting for him to come by the house to pick you up, and meet your parents. It’s much different when your child becomes a teen.

Often my dad would scrutinize him and watch him flinch. Kids nowadays are pairing off between the ages of 12 and 14. They have much more serious relationships reserved for later teen years. Parents worry about them experimenting with sex. Be able to talk with your teens. Explain to them what your concerns are, sex, drinking, or relationships. Let them know what your hopes and expectations are for their future.

Encourage your teen to allow you to meet their friends. When parents are working, the hours between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM are prime trouble time. Tami Beck, a mother of two in Shawnee, Kansas, remembers when a boy came to pick up her 15-year old daughter, and called from the driveway.

“He pulls in and gets on his cell phone and says I’m here” Beck recalls. I said to my daughter, Tell him he needs to come in. Your parents want to meet him.” Always be sure you have the cell phone numbers of your child’s teen friends.

vinegarWith the cold season coming, parents should make sure to have vinegar on hand to treat many common ailments.

The fifth-century BC Greek physician Hippocrates is said to have recommended a vinegar/honey mixture to his patients to clear up phlegm and ease breathing. Vinegar was used in hand washing in the 10th century to prevent the spread of infection. During World War 1, vinegar was used as a disinfectant. Contrary to popular belief it does not promote weight loss. Also, it does not cure cancer, high blood pressure, or heart disease.

kidsDo you think parents who take their kids out to eat at fancy restaurants are being selfish?

One restaurant in Philadelphia in banning kids under 6 years of age.

It’s not wrong to take small children out to eat with you, but there have been many instances where kids misbehave and the parents don’t take charge of the situation, or reprimand them. Often when kids start shrieking, the whole dining room stops. Other diners become stressed and do not enjoy their meal.

teachersMeeting with teachers usually happens twice a year. That long awaited time that parents meet with their child’s teachers is a time some parents wish to avoid.

You can love them or hate them, but these conferences with teachers give the parents a chance to be on a one to one basis, to learn about their child’s progress.

Conferences provide a opportunity for parents to get an idea of how their children are doing in class. By meeting with the parents, this also gives teachers an opportunity to understand the student’s home life.

Parents often listen to the teacher’s assessment, and will ask questions. By working together as a team, teachers and parents can bring students to their full capacity.

After a conference with your child’s teachers, parents should discuss with their children in a calm manner how they may better improve their schoolwork. Find out what their concerns are, and how they are feeling they are doing.

When speaking with your child’s teacher, bring a list of questions. You may only have five minutes for discussion. Keep it brief, other parents are waiting to speak to the teacher also.

Try not to miss these conferences. They give parents the opportunity to affirm that their children are doing well, and they haven’t missed anything.

Do you attend your child’s parent-teacher conferences? If so, do you find them meeting with teachers beneficial?

Parents Be Aware!

Baby_Monitor_CordCords belonging to monitoring devices have caused deaths of babies due
to strangulation.

Parents, without thinking, can make the mistake of leaving an appliance, such as a baby monitor, near an unattended baby. Even though this appliance is unplugged, the parent may come back after leaving the room to discover a tragic circumstance.

Parents should not place electrical cords near a crib, or changing table. It is best when finishing using an item with an electrical cord to always be in the habit of putting the item away, before leaving your baby unattended.
